About eight Madonna University students from Okija, Rivers State, have reportedly died in a bus accident on their way to Taraba State.
The students were said to be on their way home from school after being asked to leave due to the upcoming general elections.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, February 18th at the TTC/Special Science School junction in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
In addition, 7 students were said to have survived the incident with varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to Ebonyi State’s Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital.
“While returning from Nwezenyi, Igbeagu, Izzi, Ebonyi State, Nigeria this Sunday evening where I went to pick some people, I met this horrific scene at exactly TTC/Special Science School junction along the trans-Saharan road,” said eyewitness Matthew Mbam on his Facebook page.
“Seeing the crowd of persons with some army officers around the burnt vehicle, I decided to park my car by the roadside and came out to find out what really happened. I was told that the accident happened yesterday at twilight on Saturday, February 18th, 2023.

“After asking some persons there who all declined telling me what really happened, I met the soldiers who accompanied the relatives from Taraba State, directly to ask them what happened with the burnt vehicle.
“They briefed me that the bus was coming from Port-Harcourt, conveying some students from Madonna University with some of the parents who are returning to Taraba State for a break due to upcoming elections.
“According to the story, eight students/a parent are the chelated bodies/ashes that were burned beyond recognition. And about 7 people in critical condition are currently being treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki after escaping from the bus after it caught fire after colliding with a Sienna car.”

Madonna University Accident
“Grace Usman Ezra, I had no idea sending you to Madonna University would result in your untimely death” (sic). Yesterday, 18 of you travelled from Madonna University to Jalingo only to learn that your bus was involved in an accident and caught fire; 8 of you escaped the bus. “All is well with the ten of you and the rest of the survivors; I pray for your quick recovery and may God comfort all of us who have lost our children,” he said.
