Controversy as INEC insists Obi’s campaign DG, Akin Osuntokun remains ZLP candidate
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that Akin Osuntokun, the newly-appointed Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), remains the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) senatorial candidate for Ekiti central in Ekiti State. This comes with only 57 days left until the general election in 2023.
Recall that on Wednesday, Osuntokun gave an interview to Channels Television, during which he stated that he had given up his senatorial ambition under ZLP in order to take up the post of DG for Obi’s campaign.

Festus Okoye, the INEC Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, has stated that no individual or political party can at this point withdraw, submit, or substitute the name of any candidate taking part in the general elections of 2023.
He also emphasised that Osuntokun continues to be ZLP’s candidate for the Ekiti Central Senatorial seat.

On Thursday, he stated to ejesgist.ng that “the law is very clear.” “Both the period for substitution and the period for withdrawal as outlined in our timetable and schedule of activities, as well as in the electoral act, have passed,” the statement read, adding that the electoral act has also reached its conclusion.
This online newspaper is aware that in order for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make any changes to the names of candidates who have already been submitted, an order from a legal tribunal is required first.
