Who is Akshata Murthy?

Akshata Murthy, Rishi’s wife, assumes the job, becoming the new “First Lady” of 10 Downing Street.

Akshata, a 42-year-old fashion designer who wed Sunak in Bengaluru, India, in 2009, and their two daughters Krishna and Anoushka would be relocating to the renowned street.

The daughter of Murthy is accustomed to making headlines, made headlines earlier this year when it emerged that she had kept her non-domicile status and avoided paying significant taxes on a personal business.

Her “non-dom” tax status, which is estimated to be worth £200 million, exempted her from paying UK taxes on money generated abroad.

By paying £30,000 to maintain the status, Murthy was able to avoid paying taxes on the approximately £11.5 million in annual dividends from her ownership stake in her father’s business.

Who is Akshata Murthy’s Father

Her father is the founder of the technology company Infosys and a self-described $4.5 billion Indian billionaire, N.R. Narayana Murthy.

Murthy’s daughter currently owns 1% of the company, with the position estimated to be valued close to £700 million.

The family is also participating in a £900 million joint venture with Amazon in India.

How Akshata Murthy met Rishi Sunak 

After completing her studies in economics and French at Claremont McKenna College in California, Murthy moved to Los Angeles to pursue her studies in fashion design and merchandising. Shee later earned an MBA from Stanford.

She met Sunak there, who was doing classes in the US on a coveted Fulbright grant. Four years later, the couple were married.

Akshata Murthy Business Life

In 2007, she started her own business, Akshata Designs, but it failed very quickly.

The current PM gave her his shares of Catamaran Ventures UK, a company they later founded in London, before he was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015.

Ms. Murty, a businesswoman with many hats to wear, owns one venture capital firm based in the UK and serves as a director or direct shareholder for at least five other UK firms, including Jamie Oliver’s pizza restaurants.

With a combined wealth of £730 million, the couple will make their first appearance on the Sunday Times rich list in May 2022, making Sunak the first politician to do so since the list’s inception in 1989.

The same list estimated Queen Elizabeth II’s wealth to be $418.5 million before to her passing.
