Nigerian Court Jails Armed Robbers 7 Years For Robbing Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan
Praise Gelson and Usman Garba were convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison by a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt for breaking into the home of former first lady Patience Jonathan to steal valuables worth millions of naira.
This was stated in a decision by Justice Adolphus Enebeli, who also convicted and sentenced one Tamunoala Alatoru to six months in prison for failing to carry out her responsibilities.
Dame Patience Faka Jonathan was a Nigerian civil servant who served as the first lady of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 and as the country’s second lady from 2007 to 2010. She is the spouse of the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. She also served as Bayelsa State’s Permanent Secretary.
In November 2022, the defendants were initially charged with three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery, and attempted murder of the former President’s wife.
Gelson and Garba, the first and third defendants, were found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of armed robbery and attempted murder by the trial judge, Justice Ebebeli.
Ebebeli also ruled that the prosecution proved its case against the second defendant, Alatoru, based on her negligence in performing her duties, and that she should serve six months in prison.
