ASUU Makes Fresh Demands from FG

ASUU seeks increment of education tax to 10 per cent

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has proposed that the education tax be raised from its current rate of 2.5 percent to a rate of 10 percent.

The statement was made by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke yesterday in Abuja, during the public presentation of 50 textbooks that were sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Osodeke heaped praise on TETFund, describing it as the “brainchild” of ASUU, and praising the agency for its role in transforming the higher education sector of the country.

He stated that if the education tax that is currently being collected by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was increased to 10%, then TETFund would be able to raise more money to address the challenges that are currently being faced by the sector.

Osodeke said that there was a need to reposition and expand the tax net in order to bring more resources for tertiary education institutions, while at the same time condemning the careless attitude of some large companies and wealthy Nigerians regarding the payment of education tax.
