CBN blames Nigerians for naira scarcity, demands change of attitude

Thursday, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) blamed Nigerians for the shortage of naira banknotes in the country.

Rashidat Monguno, the Director of Consumer Protection, stated this during a visit to several Microfinance banks in Kwara State.

The director of the CBN was in Kwara to monitor the compliance of MFBs in the state with the apex bank’s directive on the re-design of the naira.

Monguno, who condemned the hoarding of naira banknotes by unscrupulous Nigerians, insisted that the current banknotes would remain scarce due to Nigerians’ attitude.

She stated, “Because of the hording mentality of some Nigerians, even those who do not need the money are rushing to get it and keep it, rather than spend it.

“Currency management is a cycle, but we have not allowed it to mature, because when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issues naira, we expect it to return to the banking system.

Currently, however, everyone collecting naira is hoarding it. If we continue with this attitude and the CBN issues (new notes) from now until December, it will not matter how many naira we issue; it will not be enough.”

Monguno explained that despite the scarcity, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would not continue to release banknotes into circulation due to the impact on the economy.

“And you are aware that in every economy, the indent must be subject to proper accountability.

“You don’t just issue naira for fun; you issue an amount commensurate with the level of economic activity in that country,” the CBN official explained.
