The allegations of certificate forgery against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have caught the attention of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). A pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), has called on the regional body to investigate these allegations.
NADECO USA, in a letter signed by its Executive Director, Lloyd Ukwu, expressed concerns about the allegations against President Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS. The group highlighted that if these allegations are proven true, they could seriously undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of ECOWAS.

The letter also called for President Tinubu’s immediate resignation as ECOWAS Chairman, pending the outcome of the investigation. NADECO USA emphasized the importance of upholding the highest standards of integrity and credibility within ECOWAS leadership for the success of the organization and the region.
According to the letter, “Recent reports and allegations regarding the conduct of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, the current Chairman of ECOWAS, have cast a shadow over the credibility and integrity of him and by extrapolation, ECOWAS, the organization.”

NADECO USA pointed out that the allegations against Tinubu include certificate forgery at Chicago State University and other drug-related offenses in the United States. The group further noted that these allegations have become a matter of public record, and President Tinubu has not denied them.
The letter raised moral and ethical questions regarding a president facing such allegations while holding a prominent position within a regional organization. It stated, “It is morally questionable and globally embarrassing for a president facing such allegations to hold such a prominent position within our regional organization.
The group respectfully called upon the member states of ECOWAS to initiate a serious and thorough investigation into the allegations surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who currently holds the position of Chairman. These allegations not only raise questions about the reputation of ECOWAS but also pose significant moral and legal concerns about President Tinubu’s fitness to continue leading the esteemed regional body.
