Buhari nominates Lauretta Onochie as NDDC Chairman
In a letter to the Senate, President Muhammadu Buhari has requested that Lauretta Onochie be approved to serve as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Onochie is the Special Assistant to the President for New Media.
Remember that the Senate caved in July of last year to pressure from Civil Society Organizations, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other Nigerians and refused to confirm Onochie as a Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
This decision was made in response to the pressure that was being applied by these groups.
Just as the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dr. Pius Odubu, General Charles Airhiavbere is the Executive Director, Finance for the NDDC, which was read out by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who also read the letter from President Buhari, the other fifteen members making up the list for the NDDC were also read out.
Almost immediately after the list was read aloud, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the APC in Delta Central, raised an objection to the fact that there was no representation from Delta State.
According to the act that established the NDDC, each state that is a part of the NDDC is required to have a representative, and he pleaded with the Executive to correct the discrepancy.
Lawan, on the other hand, gave his word that he would see to it that the Act was followed to the latter, as he promised to do so in order to avoid delaying the screening process.
