BREAKING: Church of England approves blessing of gay marriages

The General Synod of the has approved the proposal to bless same-sex couples in civil partnerships and marriage.

At Thursday’s meeting of the church’s parliament, a two-day marathon debate resulted in a vote for the motion.

Acceptance of the motion permits same-sex couples to attend Anglican services, including prayers of dedication, thanksgiving, and God’s blessing, following a legal marriage ceremony.

Priests will have the option to bless gay couples, but may opt out if they so choose.

The motion was not intended to alter the stance on gay marriage. Still, same-sex couples cannot marry in churches. A minute of silence was observed prior to the vote, after which the Archbishop of Canterbury offered a prayer.
