Court Orders Immediate Arrest Of Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers Governor
A bench warrant has been issued by a high court in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers, against former governor Rotimi Amaechi and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Tonye Cole.
Justice Chinwendu Nwogu issued a bench warrant against Sahara Energy Resources Limited, Chamberlain Peterside, NG powers HPS Limited, and Cenpropsaroten Management Limited in response to a lawsuit filed by the Rivers state government alleging misappropriation of public funds during Amaechi’s tenure as governor of the state from 2007 to 2015.
Rotimi Amaechi and Nyesom Wike Brawl
After Governor Nyesom Wike appointed a seven-member panel in 2022 to investigate Amaechi’s alleged withdrawal of N96 billion from the treasury during his tenure as governor, criminal charges were filed.
They investigated the sale of valuable assets such as the Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel, and the awarding of the monorail project contract.
Despite Amaechi’s insistence that he is innocent of fraud, the supreme court denied his application challenging the investigation.
The bench warrant was issued against the defendants because they failed to appear in court to face the criminal charges.
