Doguwa was declared the winner by Professor Ibrahim Yakasai, the Returning Officer, on February 26 at the INEC office in Tudun Wada.

According to Yakasai, Doguwa received 39,732 votes to defeat Salisu Abdullahi of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), who received 34,780 votes. There were rumors at the time that Prof. Yakasai made the statement under duress.
