PDP chairman, Iyorchia Ayu steps aside, Party names His Deputy, Umar Iliya Damagum as his interim replacement
National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has resigned as party leader.
Ayu will be replaced by the Deputy National Chairman, (North) Umar Iliya Damagum.
Damagum will serve as the Interim National Chairman of the PDP pending the outcome of the court case.
Recall that a High Court in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, had restrained embattled Ayu from parading himself as chairman of the party pending the determination of the substantive suit which has been adjourned to April 17, 2023 for hearing.
Terhide Utaan, a member of the PDP from Benue and the plaintiff before Justice W. I. Kpochi, obtained the order prohibiting Ayu from posing as the party’s national chairman.
The plaintiff, speaking to journalists in Makurdi after obtaining the court order, stated that following Ayu’s suspension by his Igyorov Ward Executive Committee on Sunday, it would be improper for him to continue to hold the position of national chairman and further fracture the party.
Ayu was suspended late last week for anti-party activities in the wake of the party’s loss in the presidential election.
In a statement released on Monday by his media aide Simon Imobo-Tswam, however, the former lawmaker argued that only the ward lacked the authority to suspend him.
Nyesom Wike, Ayu’s political rival in the PDP and the governor of Rivers State, expressed his delight on Monday that the Benue State ward executive council voted against him.
“I am not from Benue State, but I am happy, and now that Benue State has done it, we would now come out and say we are in support of it,” he said.
Prior to this development, there were numerous calls for Ayu to relinquish his position as party chairman so that a Southerner could assume the position.
