The Chief Magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, extended Kuti’s remand until Tuesday, May 23rd, according to court documents.

The document indicates that a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State granted the police’s request for an extension of Seun Kuti’s remand until Tuesday (today) in order for the police to complete their investigation and for the advice of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The police informed the court that the previously granted two-day remand extension was insufficient for them to complete their investigation.

In response to the police’s request, the magistrate declared, “I’ll grant the extension. The matter has been adjourned until May 23, 2023, for the DPP’s advice, according to an exclusive document obtained by our reporter on Monday.

Meanwhile, the musician’s attorney, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, on Thursday stated that his client’s bail conditions had been met.

However, our correspondent has learned that police solicitors went to court on Thursday to request an extension of the musician’s detention without informing the musician’s legal counsel.

“The police attorneys appeared in court on Thursday without notifying Seun’s attorneys. When the matter was called for mention, a young lawyer in court pleaded with the magistrate to pause proceedings for approximately five minutes to allow Seun Kuti’s attorney, Olumide-Fusika, SAN, to arrive from Ikeja.

“But the magistrate refused and extended Seun’s detention until Monday,” a source with knowledge of the situation revealed on Thursday to our correspondent.

According to our correspondent, Simon Lough, SAN, the lead counsel for the police, moved the application, noting that the extension would permit further investigation of the case.

Kuti was charged with assaulting a police officer during an altercation on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Saturday, May 13th.

Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, reacted to the development in an interview with our correspondent by stating that the musician’s bail conditions had been met, while implying that the court’s decision for the four-day remand extension would nevertheless be honoured.

Olumide-Fusika stated, “There are no remarks regarding the four-day extension. It is a court decision, so we shall see.

“However, we have satisfied the bail conditions for Seun Kuti. However, due to a four-day court decision, the presiding magistrate did not sign off until after that time.”
