Buhari seeks Senate’s approval to pay N226bn, $556.8m, £98.5m judgement debts

In a significant development, Nigerian President Major General Muhammadu Buhari has approached the Senate with a request to approve the payment of a substantial judgement debt owed by the Federal Government. The debt, totaling $566,754,584.31, £98,526,012.00, and N226 billion, is said to be the result of various legal cases against the government.

The request was presented to the Senate by President Buhari in a letter read during a plenary session, as confirmed by Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday. The debt, accumulated over time, will be settled through the issuance of promissory notes, as disclosed in the President’s correspondence

Earlier this year, it was reported by Ejes Gist that there were a staggering 648 cases filed against President Buhari and other government parastatals. This recent move to seek Senate approval signals the government’s intention to address these outstanding legal matters and fulfill its financial obligations.

Adding context to the situation, the country’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, shed light on the government’s track record in tackling terrorism and . Mr Malami revealed that the Buhari administration had achieved convictions in 397 terrorism-related cases, while an impressive 7,000 crime and anti-corruption cases had been successfully prosecuted over the span of eight years.

The Attorney-General also touched upon the government’s efforts to combat gender-based violence, including the establishment of an inter-ministerial management committee dedicated to eradicating such cases. Furthermore, Mr Malami disclosed that the government had generated significant revenue, amounting to N1,823,788,146.86, through the sale of forfeited properties.

In a notable achievement, the Ministry of Justice, under the President’s mandate, has successfully recovered substantial sums of money from various jurisdictions. These recoveries include £6,324,627.66, €5,494,743.71, and $390,000,000, as per the Attorney-General’s statement.
