Yahaya Bello: Court remands Yahaya Bello’s nephew in prison over alleged N10bn fraud

, a nephew of Kogi State Governor , and one Dauda Sulaiman have been remanded in custody until their bail requirements have been satisfied by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja.

Upon being charged with misappropriation and money laundering on a 10-count basis, they were placed on remand along with one Abdulsalami Hudu, Cashier of the Kogi State House Administration (currently at large).

Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

Yahaya Bello Nephew and Sulaiman are charged with defrauding the Kogi State Treasury by fraudulently withdrawing N10, 270,556,800, which they then allegedly delivered to Rabiu Tafada, a Bureau de Change operator in Abuja, to keep or convert into foreign currencies for personal gain.

One of the charges reads: “That between January and December 2021, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalami Hudu (now at large) procured Rabiu Usman Tafada to take possession of the total sum of N5,865,756,800 (Five Billion, Eight Hundred and Sixty Five Million, Seven Hundred and Fifty-Six Thousand, Eight Hundred Naira)

Another count states: “That between January and December 2021, in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalami Hudu (now at large) assisted Rabiu Usman Tafada in retaining the total sum of N2,509,650,000.00 (Two Billion Five Hundred and Nine Million, Six Hundred, and Fifty Thousand), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds

However, they entered a “not guilty” plea to the allegations made against them by the EFCC.

Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the prosecution’s attorney, requested that the court set a date for the trial to begin in light of the defendants’ plea agreements.

Abdulwahab Mohammed SAN, the attorney for the second and third defendants, informed the court of his request for the defendants’ release on bail.

Justice Omotosho Verdict on Yahaya Bello nephew case

Justice Omotosho granted the defendants bail in the amount of N1 billion each, along with two sureties who must each post a N2 billion bond and own real estate worth N500 million. The chief registrar of the Court must have the property titles on file.

The chief registrar of the Court must receive bank statements from each of the sureties and defendants, as well as copies of their international passports.

The sureties must also present an affidavit of means and proof of three years’ worth of tax clearance.

The defendants were subsequently sent to Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja pending the fulfilment of their bail requirements, and the case was continued until a hearing on February 6, 2023.
