Court threatens to jail President Buhari, Ahmad Lawan, Abubakar Malami

, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, and Lauretta Onochie, the Chairperson of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have all received warnings from the Federal High Court in Abuja regarding the repercussions of disobeying a previous injunction.

The National Assembly was prohibited from screening and approving the nominations of Ms. Onochie and Chief Samuel Ogbuku as the Chairman and Managing Director (MD) of the NDDC, respectively, by the court.

Justice J. K. Omotosho, the presiding judge, issued an order suspending all proceedings in the lawsuit brought by Ama Etuwewe (SAN) & Co. until its outcome.

The notice stated, “Take notice that you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be subject to being committed to prison unless you obey the directions contained in this order.”

The court also prevented Mr. Buhari from ordaining Ms. Onochie and Ogbuku.

Recall that the pair were last week screened and confirmed by the National Assembly as the Chairman and MD of the NDDC, respectively, despite Etuwewe’s lawsuit demanding that the NDDC Act’s provisions be duly followed.

The lawsuit argued that as arguably the largest oil-producing community in Delta State, the Itsekiri ethnic nationality should produce the NDDC board chairman and MD.

After reading the affidavit and speaking with the plaintiff’s attorney, Justice Omotosho, the presiding judge, adjourned the case until January 11, 2023, for further hearing.

Despite the court’s directive, the Senate confirmed Onochie and Ogbuku as chairman and MD of the NDDC on Tuesday.
