The decision of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, to endorse Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, according to Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has not changed.
The incident occurred after Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a former group leader, was photographed ‘blessing’ Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, in Akure, Ondo State.
Fasoranti Praying for Tinubu in his Home
At his home on Sunday, Fasoranti and a few Afenifere elders endorsed Tinubu for the position of next President.
Adebanjo, Chief Sola Ebiseni, the Secretary-General, and the Publicity Secretary were among the group members that did not attend the meeting.
Adebanjo had previously endorsed Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for president, claiming that Afenifere supported his choice.
Adebanjo said he was not intended to attend the meeting since he was not properly invited in an interview with newsmen.
Pa Fasoranti called Adebanjo on Saturday about the scheduled meeting with Tinubu, and he also briefed him about the group’s position, according to Adebanjo.
Therefore, the Afenifere chairman claimed that Obi already had his and the organization’s backing.
I was not supposed to be there in the first place, he continued. Second, we have stated our viewpoint clearly.
I said that I would come if Pa Fasoranti asked me to when he asked if I was coming. However, inform him of Afenifere’s viewpoint. I will not get into a debate over that after he has done that.
“Afenifere has declared her support for Obi. any other split-off or insurgent group… I will not get into a debate about that. That is a distraction in my opinion. We will now take action to ensure that the election goes well.
