Many Stranded as Bridge Collapse in Delta State
Yesterday’s dramatic turn of events left motorists stranded on the Ughelli/Asaba motorway close to Ogwashi-Uku as a bridge being built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) was on the verge of collapsing.
Those travelling from both Asaba and Ughelli were hesitant to cross the bridge in their vehicles due to the bridge’s deteriorating condition for fear of being engulfed by the collapsing structure.
Hundreds of disgruntled travellers were observed crossing the bridge on motorcycles and on foot while carrying their luggage to continue their journey. Numerous drivers were compelled to abandon their vehicles on the road.

To mitigate additional risks, some commuters and vehicle owners opted for longer alternative routes that completely avoided the problematic bridge.
In response to the imminent danger, CCECC made the difficult decision to close the road until further notice out of concern for potential casualties.
The company is responsible for a portion of the Ughelli-Asaba Road dualization project, as well as the faulty bridge.
Since CCECC has been stationed at the construction site for over ten months with minimal visible progress, concerns have been raised regarding the bridge’s slow progress.
Due to the recent water overflow, the sand used to cover the box culverts, which are essential components of the bridge’s infrastructure, has been steadily eroded, according to an anonymous source within the company.

Unquestionably, the road closure has caused significant disruptions to both local and long-distance travel. Now, travelers are compelled to seek alternative routes and modes of transportation, causing delays and inconveniencing all those impacted.
Together with relevant authorities, CCECC is anticipated to move quickly to repair the bridge and reopen the road.
Until the necessary repairs are completed and the bridge’s structural integrity is ensured, travelers must exercise caution and adhere to official instructions for alternate routes.
The incident highlights the need for increased oversight of future construction projects to ensure public safety and minimise travel disruptions.
