Certificate forgers, drug offenders not eligible for Tinubu's student loan scheme: FG

Certificate Forgers and Drug Offenders Ineligible for Tinubu’s Student Loan Scheme.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has declared that individuals convicted of certificate forgery, drug offenses, and cultism are barred from accessing the federal government’s student loan scheme. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), responsible for administering the scheme, outlined these exclusions in a series of “frequently asked” questions posted on its official X handle on Friday.

NELFUND student loan Portal Opens for Application, Learn How to Apply Today

NELFUND specified that applications from citizens “convicted of fraud and forgery, drug offences, cultism, felony, or any offences involving dishonesty” will be rejected. Additionally, those who have defaulted on previous loans from licensed financial institutions or have been dismissed for submitting fraudulent documents or exam malpractices by any school authority will also be ineligible.

The application portal for the first phase of the student loan scheme, currently open to students from federal institutions across Nigeria, was launched by NELFUND on Friday. This initiative aims to support students financially, ensuring access to education without the burden of financial constraints.

However, President Tinubu’s own history has been marred by controversies, including allegations of academic forgery, identity theft, and narcotics trafficking. These accusations surfaced before, during, and after the 2023 presidential election, leading to extensive litigation that reached the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Despite the serious nature of these allegations, the apex court deemed Mr. Tinubu fit to lead the country.
