Chinwoke Mbadinuju, ex Anambra Governor dies, cause of death emerges


A State, is dead.



Former governor of the state of Anambra, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, has been confirmed dead, Ejes Gist News Nigeria reports.


On Tuesday, Mbadinuju reportedly passed away at the National Hospital in Abuja at the age of 78.

Chinwoke Mbadinuju, affectionately known as “Odera, is a Nigerian politician who served as Anambra State governor from 1999 to 2003. On February 20, 1947, he was born in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria.

Mbadinuju earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a doctorate in law from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom. He also went to law school in Nigeria and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1976.


On the Peoples Democratic Party platform, he was elected governor of Anambra State in 1999. (PDP). He was widely criticised during his tenure for alleged corruption and mismanagement of state resources. He was also accused of failing to provide the people of the state with basic amenities and infrastructure.

Political unrest marred Mbadinuju’s administration, including the impeachment of the state deputy governor, Dr. Chudi Nwike, and the removal of the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife. He was also accused of funding the Bakassi Boys, a private militia group that carried out extrajudicial killings in the state.

After leaving office in 2003, Mbadinuju joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of Nigeria in 2007.



Tuesday’s family statement signed by his son, Mr. Cheta Mbadinuju, revealed that he passed away after a brief illness.

“With heavy hearts but utmost gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and associate, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, a former governor of Anambra State and elder statesman.





“Odera, as he was affectionately known, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2023 at the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness, surrounded by his family and friends.

“During this difficult time, we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon him and those who mourn his passing. The family will announce his funeral arrangements as soon as possible.”


Mbadinuju was rumoured to have ruled Anambra during its most turbulent political period.
