Mrs. Hadiza Shagari, wife of Shehu Shagari, Nigeria’s first democratically elected President, has died.
Hadiza died on Thursday, August 12th, 2021, at the age of 80, as a result of COVID-19 complications.

Following the transfer of power by the military regime of former Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd), late Shagari became the first democratically elected Nigerian President, ushering in the Second Republic.
He was in power from October 1979 to December 1983, when the Coup d’etat of that year overthrew him.
Following the news of Hadiza’s death, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences to the late former President’s family.
Hadiza was described as a pillar of strength and support by the President’s media adviser, Femi Adesina, in a statement. Hadiza was described as a pillar of strength and support, holding forth for the family while her husband was busy serving the nation.

He also expressed condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, and urged the family to take solace in Hadiza’s good deeds.
