ASUU declares lecture-free day, plans protest over half salaries

The Federal ’s decision to enact a “no-work, no-pay” policy for lecturers in the nation has prompted the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to announce plans for a one-day nationwide protest.

The nationwide demonstration will be organised at various union branches on the campuses of public universities, and all lecturers who are members will be excused from teaching that day.

On Sunday, November 13, 2022, a union member who is a member of the National Executive Council of the union revealed this to newsmen.

“We are protesting,” the source claimed. The government needs to understand that we are not contract workers since branches will select their own dates.

Dele Ashir, the chairperson of ASUU’s University of Lagos branch, confirmed the development in a letter by announcing that the chapter would demonstrate on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

The special congress/protest demonstration against the casualization of intellectualism in Nigeria would take place on “Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Julius Berger Auditorium,” according to the letter that was sent to “all stakeholders.”

As of the time this article was filed, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the national president of ASUU, could not be immediately reached for comment.

This follows the Federal Government’s decision to pay ASUU members pro rata for the number of days they worked in October, starting on the day that their industrial action was suspended.
