According to historians, the day began to be commemorated after Pope Gregory XIII established the Gregorian calendar in 1952 and decreed that the new calendar would begin on January 1st. Previously, the New Year was observed at the end of March.

People are said to have started celebrating April Fool’s Day on April 1st, when the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian calendar.
