FG punished me for going to court over naira policy – Gov Bello Matawalle

 

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State asserts that elements of the Federal Government conspired against his re-election bid in the state’s recently concluded election for governor.

 

Matawalle of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was defeated by Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Matawalle attributed his inability to secure a second term to his opposition to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) naira redesign policy.

Recall that the governors of Zamfara, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, and Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State had dragged the Federal Government to the Supreme Court over the shortage of cash caused by the CBN’s cashless policy.

 

During an interview with newsmen on Thursday, the governor claimed that there were plans to punish him, Ganduje, and El-Rufai for their stance on the naira policy prior to the general elections.

 

He stated, “The rumour is that we went to court over the redesign of the new naira banknotes. They stated that I, Ganduje, and El-Rufai would be appropriately punished.”

 

Recall that while ruling party candidate Uba Sani narrowly avoided defeat, Ganduje’s candidate Nasir Gawuna was defeated by Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Matawalle alleged in the interview that all polling stations were flooded with military officers in an effort to intimidate voters.

 

Three days prior to the gubernatorial election, over 300 vehicles transporting soldiers were dispatched to Zamfara.

 

“There are so many soldiers! Better would be if they could send them to us to combat insecurity. He added that they only sent them during elections.
