The former Cross River governor, has said that it is the time of the north to produce Nigeria’s next president.

The former Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Liyel Imoke who also doubles as the Deputy-Director (Operation) CRS Presidential Campaign Council has reiterated that PDP is in order for electing a Northerner as Presidential candidate for 2023 general elections.

In several town hall meetings held in Bekwarra and Yala Local Government Areas of Cross River State, Sen. Liyel Imoke reiterated that the PDP has been in power for sixteen years and out of that sixteen years, Southerners have held the Presidency for fourteen years. It is only fair and proper to give the North an equal representation like the South.

Sen. Imoke further enlightened the people that Obasanjo governed for right years and handed over to Late Yar’Adua from the North who governed for only two years before his death. Imoke stated that at that time the North was supposed to have completed their eight years which was truncated by Yar’Adua’s death. However, he said stakeholders from the South, including himself, pleaded with Northerners to allow His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Johnathan, who was Vice President and a Southerner, the opportunity to complete Yar’Adua’s term using doctrine of necessity. Dr Jonathan was further allowed another term in 2011 thereby cutting short the eight years term of the North to only two years.

Imoke also explained that the Presidency is usually zoned by geopolitical zones and that the North-East where Atiku hails from has never produced a democratic President.

Imoke further summited that from 1999 till date, Southerners have been in power cumulatively for fourteen years leaving the North with two years alone in power under PDP.

According to him, even if we add the eight years of President Buhari, the Northerners are still short-changed by four years because it brings their total to ten years compared to the fourteen years of the South. So he said it is timely that the PDP produced a Northern President for fairness and H.E. Atiku Abubakar is a liberal Northerner who will unite the country.
