Who is Pablo Escobar?

Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist who was the founder and sole leader of the Medellín Cartel. His cartel supplied an estimated 80% of the cocaine smuggled into the United States at the height of his career, turning over US$21.9 billion a year in personal income. He was often called “The King of Cocaine” and was the wealthiest criminal in history, with an estimated known net worth of US$30 billion by the early 1990s, making him one of the richest men in the world at his peak. Escobar was born in Rionegro, Colombia, and grew up in nearby Medellín. He studied briefly at Universidad Autónoma Latinoamericana of Medellín, but left without graduating. In the early 1970s, he began to work for various contraband smugglers, often kidnapping and holding people for ransom before beginning to distribute powder cocaine himself, as well as establishing the first smuggling routes into the United States in 1975. His infiltration to the drug market of the U.S. expanded exponentially due to the rising demand for cocaine, and by the mid-1980s, he was shipping the equivalent of almost 500 tons of cocaine per year to the United States. His drug empire quickly became a multibillion- enterprise, and he was known for his violent methods of dealing with enemies and those who crossed him. He was also known for his public displays of wealth, including purchasing a Learjet for US$30 million and building a luxurious mansion known as La Catedral, which included a zoo, a lake, and a sculpture garden. Escobar was shot and killed in 1993 by Colombian National Police, bringing an end to his reign of terror.

Pablo Escobar was one of the most notorious drug lords in history, and his life and legacy have been the subject of much debate. Born in 1949 in Medellin, Colombia, Escobar rose to power in the 1970s and 1980s as the leader of the Medellin Cartel, a powerful drug trafficking organization.

Despite his criminal activities, Escobar was also seen as a Robin Hood-like figure in some parts of Colombia, as he used his wealth to build schools, hospitals, and housing for the poor. Escobar was eventually killed in 1993 in a shootout with Colombian police, but his legacy lives on in the form of books, movies, and documentaries.
