Kenyan Edwin Kibet emerged winner of Lagos Marathon 2023. 

Edwin Kibet of Kenya has won the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2023 race with a time of 2:14:16 seconds.

The race was keenly contested by 300 runners including local and international participants jostling for $50,000 cash prize.


It began at 7:00 a.m on Saturday at National Stadium, Surulere, with Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on the sidelines for a start.

On Saturday morning, Kibet defeated approximately 300 marathon runners to win the 42km race.

The 39-year-old completed the race in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and six seconds, besting Dekeba Shefa of Ethiopia and Bernard Sang of Kenya, who placed second and third, respectively, and will receive $40,000 and $30,000, respectively.


Ethiopia’s Alemenseh Guta was the first woman to cross the finish line, followed by Ethiopia’s Kebene Urisa and Kenya’s Naomi Maiyo.

The men’s and women’s winners qualified for the marathon event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Felicia Adetutu was the first Nigerian woman to cross the finish line, placing tenth in the women’s race.

She earned $2000 and N3 million for her respective finishes.

The 42-kilometer race started at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluded at Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.


Less than eight years after its inaugural edition, the world athletics governing body recently upgraded the yearly competition to gold status.

Geleta Ulfata of Ethiopia won the 2022 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, while Emmaneul Naibei and David Barmasai won the 5th and 6th editions, respectively.
