Go After Buhari’s Cabinet Members, Matawalle Dares EFCC

The governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pursue officials of the Presidency and members of the outgoing Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Matawalle stated this in response to a statement attributed to the anti-corruption agency’s chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, that the EFCC had sent invitations to all outgoing governors and commissioners in order to initiate an investigation.

He stated that the investigation should include not only outgoing governors and commissioners, but also those working at the Presidential Villa.

.

Matawalle also urged the chairman of the EFCC to ensure that the investigation is not politicised and that all those found to be corrupt are brought to justice.

The statement read, “My attention has been drawn to a statement attributed to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Malam Abdulrasheed Bawa, in which he claimed he had sent invitations to all outgoing Governors and Commissioners in an effort to initiate an investigation into allegations of corruption and abuse of office committed by them while in office.

“While this is appropriate and commendable, as it is essential for political officeholders to account for their actions while in office, and the EFCC is vested with investigative authority, this authority must be exercised prudently.

“The investigation must be exhaustive and unbiased. In this regard, the EFCC Chair’s recent invitations and statements are imbalanced, insufficient, hypocritical, and unnecessarily skewed.

“This is counterproductive to Malam Bawa’s anti-corruption crusade, assuming he is committed to one.

“In an effort to help the EFCC Chair’s obvious lack of knowledge and inertia, the investigation should be comprehensive and include all officers.

“I demand that the chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission extend similar invitations to officers of the Presidency and members of the Federal Executive Council, the highest level of government in the country.

“As I and a number of eminent Nigerians have evidence of corrupt practises, breach of public trust, and abuse of office against him and the commission he led, he must resign immediately.”

“He should explain, for example, how he has assumed the roles of plaintiff, prosecutor, and judge, and how he has executed his brand of plea bargaining with suspected criminals and saboteurs of the Nigerian economy and agenda who, instead of being put on trial, are walking freely throughout Nigeria.

“Only when the EFCC Chair does this and makes his invitation open, non-selective, and inclusive will we take him seriously.

“Only then will officers who have selflessly and meritoriously served the people and are not opposed to an examination of their records, as well as Nigerians in general, take him seriously.

“Without this, it is merely another government official who has some explaining to do over allegations of corruption, high-handedness, and abuse of office asking others to account, thereby providing Nigerians with comic relief from the current difficult times they are experiencing.”
