Soldier, policeman clash over traffic in Lagos
Yesterday, there was mayhem in Lagos’ Akpogbon neighborhood as a police officer and a soldier got into a fight over a traffic rule violation.
According to information gathered by this online newspaper, a group of police officers assigned to the Lagos State Environment and Special Offenses Enforcement Unit, Task Force, stopped some soldiers who were driving against the flow of traffic.

As one of the soldiers referred to the policeman’s action as an insult, a verbal altercation turned physical.
An armed police officer and an unarmed soldier were seen fighting in a video that quickly became popular on social media.
According to witnesses, the soldier attempted to disarm the policeman to prevent an unintentional discharge. However, the policeman stopped the attempt and protected his arm as the struggle continued.

In a hasty exodus to avoid being hit by likely stray bullets, traders and motorists fled the scene. A soldier and a member of the naval staff were seen attempting to mediate.
When contacted, SP Benjamin Hudenyin, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the altercation. He stated that no arrests were made.
They went one way, the police stopped them, and they got into a fight, he claimed. No one was detained.

Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, spokesman for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, said: “We are well aware of the situation. I’ve heard that there was a miscommunication between the soldiers and the police regarding traffic issues. There is currently no traffic and everyone is going about their daily business because the situation is under control.
“We are investigating the situation to learn the full details of what happened. We will speak with those involved, look into what happened, and then take the necessary action.
