My Worst Experiences Under Buhari – Opens Up

Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Publicity, has revealed his worst experiences as President Buhari’s spokesman.

Shehu, who previously served as vice president Atiku Abubakar’s spokesman, was appointed by Buhari in 2015 and reappointed in 2019.

Shehu revealed in an interview with BBC that his statements regarding the abduction of Kankara and the massacre of Zabarmari were his worst experiences under Buhari.

Boko Haram militants attacked a group of rice farmers in Zabarmari, Borno State, Nigeria, in November 2020.

At least 43 farmers were killed in the attack, and Garba Shehu claimed in a statement that the farmers had “no permission to be there.”

This statement was widely criticised, with many individuals accusing Shehu of holding the victims accountable for their own deaths.

In December of the same year, over 300 students from the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State, were abducted by gunmen.

In response to the abduction, Shehu stated that the number of abducted girls did not exceed ten.

This statement was also met with widespread disbelief, as numerous witnesses reported seeing hundreds of students being removed.

Later, he issued a statement apologizing for the erroneous information that only ten were abducted.

Shehu told the BBC, “When Boko Haram killed more than 50 farmers in Zabarmari, Borno State, and more than 300 girls in Kankara, Katsina State, it was reported by some that the number was 110.

“In each of these two incidents, security gave me false information, I used it, but it was later proven to be false.” As in the Kankara case, in which approximately 300 girls were kidnapped, but those who should have been aware of the situation informed me that the number of abductees did not exceed ten, I am still in pain.

“I made the statement publicly; these girls have parents and relatives; they may have felt we were downplaying the gravity of the situation; I saw them when they were released; there were 270 of them; I regret saying there were no more than ten.”

“The same thing occurred in the Zabarmari case; I was given incorrect information, and I made it public.” Things are now in the past, and I have apologised.”
