NAFDAC Director General Clears Air On Indomie Noodles Ban

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, director-general of Nigeria’s National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (), has shed more light on the recent ban on Indomie Instant Noodles.

 

Adeyeye stated that the agency had not registered a particular flavour of the brand, ‘Special Chicken Flavour,’ for sale in Nigeria.

Adeyeye disclosed to journalists in Lagos that the agency had begun random sampling and analysis of , including the seasoning, for ethylene oxide presence.

Recently, concerns have been raised about the product’s safety.

This action follows the recall of ‘Special Chicken Flavour’ Indomie Instant Noodles by the Ministries of Health in Malaysia and Taiwan due to the alleged presence of ethylene oxide, a compound linked to an increased cancer risk.

Adeyeye assured Nigerians that the product would be thoroughly investigated at both the factory and market levels. She added that the results of the product sampling and analysis would be made public.

Adeyeye stated, “The implicated Indomie Instant Noodles “Special Chicken Flavour” is not registered for sale in Nigeria by NAFDAC.” “It is important to note that noodles are on the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Import Prohibition List and are therefore prohibited from importation into Nigeria.”

 

In addition, the Director-General explained that noodles registered by NAFDAC for sale on the Nigerian market are produced in Nigeria and are only granted NAFDAC registration status after passing a stringent regulatory regime covering all aspects of Good Manufacturing Practise (GMP).

 

“The Ports Inspection Directorate (PID) is also on heightened alert to guard against the importation of the implicated product into Nigeria,” she said.

 

Adeyeye assured that NAFDAC has taken proactive measures to protect the health of Nigerians. She urged the public to remain calm and assured them that the agency would continue to ensure the safety of food, drugs, and other regulated goods in Nigeria.
