Nigerian Newspapers: 10 Key Updates for Wednesday Morning, April 24, 2024

0
Nigerian Newspapers Headlines Today , News in Nigeria NewsOnline Nigeria

Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines for Today, Wednesday April 24, 2024.

Good morning! Here are today’s highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Lead British International School Abuja, embroiled in controversy over viral videos showing bullying among its students, has been closed for three days. The closure directive was issued on Tuesday by the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, in response to growing concerns about the safety and well-being of students within the school premises. This decision reflects the government’s proactive stance on addressing issues of school violence and ensuring a conducive learning environment for all students.

2. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is considering the prosecution of 300 forex racketeers operating on a peer-to-peer platform outside financial regulations. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, revealed this during an interactive session with editors and bureau chiefs in Abuja on Tuesday, stating that their accounts were frozen following a court order issued on Monday. This move underscores the EFCC’s commitment to tackling financial crimes and enforcing regulatory compliance within the forex market.

3. The EFCC has filed a fresh charge against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory. The charge accuses Emefiele of approving the printing of N684,590,000 at the rate of N18.96 billion, raising questions about financial transparency and accountability within the country’s central banking system. This development underscores the EFCC’s efforts to hold public officials accountable for their actions and uphold the rule of law.

4. The naira continued its depreciation against the US dollar at the official market on Tuesday, closing at 1,300/$. This occurred as the Central Bank of Nigeria intensified efforts to stabilize the exchange rate by selling more dollars to Bureau De Change operators. The ongoing depreciation of the naira underscores the challenges facing Nigeria’s foreign exchange market and the need for effective monetary policies to address currency volatility and promote economic stability.

5. The EFCC urged Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja to deny bail to the detained executive of Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan. The agency cited the risk of admitting the foreigner to bail, noting the escape of his co-defendant, Nadeem Anjarwalla, from custody. This highlights the EFCC’s concerns about flight risks and the importance of preventing individuals facing criminal charges from evading justice.

6. The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the Rivers State Caretaker Committee list has escalated, with the Federal High Court Abuja restraining the party’s leadership from further action on the matter. This was revealed by the National Working Committee after its emergency meeting on Tuesday, underscoring the legal challenges facing the party and the need for internal reconciliation efforts to address factional disputes.

7. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, pledged to ensure the prosecution of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. Olukoyede stated during a meeting with select editors in Abuja on Tuesday that he had called Bello directly out of respect, urging him to address the charges against him. This statement reflects the EFCC’s determination to hold public officials accountable for alleged financial misconduct and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in governance.

8. Former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, was arrested on Monday and is set to face charges alongside his brother, Abubakar, following an investigation into alleged N8.06 billion fraud during his tenure. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, announced this development, signaling the agency’s commitment to investigating corruption allegations and prosecuting individuals implicated in financial malpractices. This underscores the importance of accountability and integrity in public service.

9. Former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, has resigned from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter delivered to the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, Ihedioha cited his long-time association with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and deemed his decision appropriate. This development reflects the evolving political landscape and the dynamics of party affiliations in Nigeria, highlighting the need for politicians to align with their principles and values.

10. A Dana Air aircraft with registration number 5N BKI, flying from Abuja to Lagos on Tuesday morning, veered off the runway while landing at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. A statement from Mr. Kingsley Ezenwa, Head of Corporate Communications of the airline, confirmed that all 83 passengers and crew members onboard were unharmed. This incident underscores the importance of aviation safety protocols and the need for vigilant monitoring to prevent accidents and ensure passenger safety.

That’s all for today’s edition of Nigerian newspapers’ headlines. We’ll see you again tomorrow for the latest news updates!

Naira Plummets to One-Month Low as Dollar Liquidity Dries Up

The Nigerian naira continued its downward spiral on Tuesday, weakening for the third consecutive day at the official market (NAFEM) to a one-month low of N1,300 per US dollar. According to data from FMDQ Securities Exchange, the naira’s decline was attributed to a significant drop in dollar liquidity.

Banking sources revealed to Business Day that investors are exiting the market and seeking safer assets due to escalating geopolitical tensions, which have strengthened the US dollar. This has resulted in a shortage of dollars in the market, putting further pressure on the naira.

On the black market, the naira initially gained some ground in the early hours of Tuesday, following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) sale of dollars to Bureau De Change (BDC) operators. However, the gain was short-lived, and the naira closed flat at N1,270 per US dollar by evening, unchanged from Monday’s rate.

Traders expressed frustration over the tight liquidity in the market, citing a scarcity of dollars. The naira’s continued depreciation has raised concerns about the country’s economic stability and the impact on inflation, trade, and investment.

The CBN has been working to stabilize the naira and boost dollar liquidity, but its efforts have been met with limited success so far. As the geopolitical tensions continue to escalate, the naira’s future remains uncertain.

Nwabali Breaks Silence On Union Saint-Gilloise Transfer Rumours

CBN resumes forex sale to BDCs at N1,021/$

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has resumed the sale of dollars to Bureau De Change (BDC) operators at the rate of N1,021 per dollar, according to a circular posted on its website on Tuesday. The circular, referenced TEM/FEM/PUB/001/013 and signed by Dr. Hassan Mahmud, Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, directed BDCs to sell at a spread not exceeding 1.5 percent above the CBN rate.

Previously, the CBN sold $10,000 to BDCs at a rate of N1101/$, instructing them to sell to eligible customers at a rate not exceeding 1.5 percent above the purchase price. The current rate represents a 7.27 percent decrease from the previous price and is expected to bolster the local currency.

The fluctuation in exchange rates was highlighted by The PUNCH, reporting that the Naira depreciated against the United States Dollar, reaching an exchange rate of N1,234 at the official foreign exchange market. This marks a decline of N65 or approximately 5.26 percent from the previous rate recorded on Friday. Such fluctuations have significant implications for trade and economic stability.

The CBN instructed eligible BDCs to commence payment of naira deposits into designated CBN accounts from April 22, 2024, and to submit proof of payment and other documents at the appropriate CBN branches for disbursement.

Despite the CBN’s efforts to defend the naira, Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves experienced a decline for over a month. The latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed a decrease from $34.45 billion on March 18, 2024, to a new low of $32.1 billion on April 18, 2024.

However, during the International Monetary Fund/World Bank Spring Meetings, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso clarified that the bank would refrain from intervening in the exchange rate unless unusual circumstances arose. He emphasized that the recent slight shift in reserves was unrelated to defending the naira.

Governor Cardoso stated, “I want to make this as clear as possible: it is not our intention to defend the naira. Some opinions concerning our reserves and the central bank’s role in defending the naira have been misconstrued.”

Another Veteran Nollywood Actor Zulu Adigwe Is Dead

The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood, has been struck by another tragic loss with the passing of yet another esteemed movie icon, Zulu Adigwe.

This heartbreaking news comes less than two weeks after the industry mourned the untimely death of another beloved Nollywood actor, John Paul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, and several others who tragically lost their lives in a boat accident two Wednesdays ago while returning from a movie shoot location.

As the Nollywood community and the public were still grappling with the grief from Junior Pope’s, John Okafor’s (Mr. Ibu’s), and Amaechi Muonagor’s recent passing, another devastating blow has struck them with the demise of the veteran actor, Adigwe.

Movie producer, Stanley Nwoko, broke the news of Adigwe’s demise in a social media post on Tuesday.

  • zulu Adigwe still alive?

I regret to announce the passing of a veteran actor, the late Mr. Zulu Adibe. The cause of his death is yet to be determined. Rest in peace, good actor,” he wrote.

Although the official cause of Adigwe’s death has not been disclosed as of the time of this report, there are speculations that the actor had been battling an undisclosed illness for some time before his passing.

We’ll Not Arrest You If You Show Up In Court EFCC Begs Yahaya Bello

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has given an assurance to embattled former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

EFCC said if he appears in court, they will not arrest him.

The anti-graft agency made the commitment during a hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.

EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) responded to concerns raised by Bello’s lawyer, Mr. Adeola Adedipe (SAN), who argued that his client was apprehensive about appearing due to the existing arrest warrant.

Pinheiro stated, “As his prosecution, I will personally apply that the arrest warrant be set aside if he comes to court next adjourned date. If he gives an undertaking that his client will be in court on the next date, I can assure him that the arrest warrant will not be executed.”

Yahaya Bello, who was once again absent from his scheduled arraignment, is facing a 19-count charge involving allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion.

The situation in court escalated when Adedipe requested Justice Emeka Nwite to rescind the exparte order of arrest issued against Bello last week.

He contended that his client had not been served with the charge as legally required when the arrest warrant was issued, noting, “As at the time the warrant was issued, the order for substituted service had not been made. That order was just made this morning.”

However, Pinheiro urged the court to deny the application and set aside the arrest warrant unless Bello made himself available for trial. He emphasized that Bello should not be allowed to use legal tactics to avoid facing his charges.

“The defendant cannot stay in hiding and file numerous applications for his arrest warrant to be vacated,” Pinheiro argued.

He further insisted that the court cannot effectively exercise jurisdiction over any application or objection in the matter until the defendant is formally arraigned, as per section 396 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

Justice Nwite, who is presiding over the case, has yet to decide on the request to vacate the arrest warrant. The EFCC maintains that Bello’s physical presence in court is essential for the proceedings to continue effectively and without further delay.

Gaps In Girls’ Education Prompted Formation Of Alternative High School – Oluremi Tinubu

The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has described her support for the education of the girl child as a response to the yawning gap in girls’ education in Nigeria.

She made this known while launching the Alternative High Schools for Girls on Tuesday in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital.

The First Lady noted: “This ceremony marks the beginning of an opportunity for a new chapter and a chance for a promising future for exceptional young girls and women who evolve through the door of this school. I introduced the idea of the establishment of an alternative high school for girls, a vision that was accepted and utilised by the Lagos State Ministry of Education in 2007 when my husband was the governor of Lagos State, and this particular school still runs to date.

“My motivation as an educationist and a lifelong teacher stems from a desire to see young girls and women who dropped out of school due to unplanned pregnancies, cultural barriers, economic and financial reasons and many more, have a second chance to acquire higher education and valuable skills to enable them reach their full potential in life.

“In a world where every girl deserves the opportunity to try and reach their fullest potential, it’s sad to witness the barriers that stand in the way of their education. No doubt, without education, girls will lack the necessary skills to support themselves and access information to make informed decisions about their health and future.”

She also maintained that the rate of school dropout was a stark reminder of the need for alternative solutions to educational pursuits.

She therefore revealed that Osun State was chosen as the location for the school through a transparent and unbiased raffle process at a strategic meeting with the state first ladies.

In his address, Governor Ademola Adeleke assured the First Lady that his administration would follow up and provide needed support to ensure a robust operation upon completion of the school. Adeleke assured that his administration is also committed to supporting girl child education.

“We have introduced a series of programmes that strengthen the capacity of families to provide basic needs. Hence, we emphasise workers’ welfare as a critical first-line item in our five-point agenda.

“We also focus on stopping the crisis of sexual violence against women. To that end, Osun is the first state to implement the resolution of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on action against sexual violence. We have met with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and resolved to set up mobile courts to try domestic sexual violence matters. Additionally, we are compiling a list of unfairly jailed girls and women to get them released. This is in addition to an agenda of empowering women through the cooperative loan scheme.”

In his address, the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education, Dr Ahmed Bobboi, hailed the contributions of the Adeleke administration to the growth and development of universal basic education in the state.

According to him: “The administration’s records enhance the confidence of UBEC and the Office of the First Lady that the new school will realise its targets and even surpass them.”

In the letter, Ihedioha stated, “Since 1998, I have contributed my quota to the development and transformation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as one of the founding members. He continued, “Regrettably, in recent times, the party has taken on a path that is at variance with my personal beliefs. Dangote, Oil Marketers

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has again crashed the prices of diesel to 940 and aviation fuel to N940 per litre.

This move follows the refinery’s previous reduction to N1,000 just two weeks ago, which was widely acclaimed.

The revised price of N940 applies to customers purchasing five million litres or more, while the rate of N970 is for those buying one million litres or above.

He stated, “Dangote Petroleum Refinery has formed a strategic alliance with MRS Oil and Gas stations to ensure that consumers can access fuel at reasonable prices across all their stations, from Lagos to Maiduguri.

Furthermore, he announced plans to extend this partnership to other prominent oil marketers to prevent retail buyers from facing inflated prices.

President Bola Tinubu previously praised Dangote for its initial price cut, hailing it as an “enterprising feat.

In response to the recent development, Ajayi Kadiri, the Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), lauded Dangote’s initiative. He remarked, “The decision to reduce prices from about N1,750 per litre to N1,200, N1,000, and now N940 showcases the local industries’ ability to positively impact the national economy.

Kadiri elaborated on the ripple effects of this move, stating that it will influence various sectors such as industrial operations, transportation, logistics, and agriculture. Moreover, he believes it will contribute to alleviating the country’s high inflation rate and facilitate the revival of dormant businesses.
