Naira Scarcity: Zenith Bank shuts branches over attacks on staff

Due to attacks on its staff and network, Zenith Bank has closed some of its branches in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and in some states of the country.

Our correspondent who checked on some of the bank’s branches in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and nearby areas as well as in other states on Tuesday found that they were locked.

On Nyanya Mararaba road, at the Check-Point branch of Zenith Bank, both the gate and the ATM gallery were locked, and no customers were in the area.

A bank worker who asked not to be named said that some of the bank’s branches were also closed because they didn’t have enough of the new naira notes.

The official said that customers from all over the country attacked many branches when they couldn’t get their hands on the new note.

Some videos on social media showed how bank employees escaped from branches that were being attacked by customers by climbing over fences.

While that was going on, some bank customers took to social media to complain about their situation.

A customer named @Ellacious berry said on Twitter that Zenith Bank was a big part of why so many people were suffering.

“I haven’t been able to test the mobile app for three days. If the mobile app is opened by accident, it won’t transfer and neither will their ATM card. She said, “I am definitely closing my account with @ZenithBank.”

Another customer, @ambi 255, said on Twitter that Zenith Bank Plc had done a terrible job.

Some of the bank’s branches in Enugu were open, but the employees weren’t wearing any of the bank’s uniforms so they wouldn’t be easily recognized.

At the same time, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) asked bank customers to be calm and patient.

In a statement, CIBN’s registrar, Akin Morakinyo, said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the banks were working hard to get things back under control.
