Nigerian Bar Association,NBA Warns INEC To Fix All Issues Before Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been urged by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to address all concerns raised during the presidential election and make sure that any bugs or glitches in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and other election technology are fixed before the March 11 governorship elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the NBA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Habeeb-Lawal, the association urged INEC to exclude all staff involved in misconduct during the presidential election from Saturday’s elections.
It also urged the electoral commission to address major issues such as the late arrival of officials and ballot materials at polling stations and the limited or non-transmission of results to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV).
In addition, the NBA urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that police officers are deployed prior to the start of voting on time. Additionally, the association advised political parties to inform their supporters and members to refrain from any conduct that may violate the Election Act.
The NBA had previously praised INEC for its conduct of the just-concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections, stating that despite the difficulties encountered, the electoral body performed admirably.
As Nigerians prepare to vote in the governorship elections, the NBA’s request that INEC address irregularities and hiccups in election technology is expected to contribute to a free, fair, and credible election.
