INEC declares Kebbi guber election inconclusive 

 

On Monday, INEC declared the Kebbi governorship election “inconclusive.”

 

The election was fiercely contested by the two largest political parties, APC and PDP.

Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of the Usman Danfodio University in Sokoto, the Collation and Returning Officer of the election, announced the position at the collation centre located at the INEC headquarters in Birnin Kebbi.

 

There were cancellations in 20 of the 21 Local Government Areas of Kebbi State, spanning a number of Registration Areas (RAs) in various polling units, he said.

 

Sa’idu stated, “We tallied the total number of PVCs collected in those polling units, which totaled 91,829.

 

“When we checked the results, the two leading political parties in this race, APC and PDP, had received 388,258 and 342,988 votes, respectively.” When we examined the difference, we found it to be 45,278.”

He noted that they had no choice but to consult section 51 subsections two and three on page 31 of the Electoral Act of 2022 for guidance.

 

According to him, the law states: “When the number of votes cast in an election in a polling unit exceeds the number of accredited voters in that polling unit, the presiding officer shall nullify the election result in that polling unit.

 

“Subsection three of section 51 stipulates that if the result of an election is overturned in accordance with subsection two, there shall be no re-vote until a new election is held in the affected polling unit.

 

Prof. Yusuf Sa’idu of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, as the collation and returning officer for the 2023 gubernatorial election in Kebbi State, hereby declare the election in Kebbi State to be inconclusive.
