In a crackdown across the country, the took 6,216 Voter Cards and Nigeria’s National Identity Cards from foreigners.

The NIS is using the clampdown as one way to make sure that foreigners won’t be able to vote in the upcoming election.

It also showed that plans are in the works to close the borders during the elections and continue to take voters cards and national identity cards from people who aren’t Nigerian.

On Wednesday in Abuja, the Comptroller General of NIS, Isah Idris, spoke at a one-way retreat for all state comptrollers to prepare for a smooth general election.

He also said that the foreigners who were caught with two important documents that only Nigerian citizens are allowed to have have been “helped out of the country.”

He said that men and officers from the NIS had stepped up their surveillance in 21 states, mostly border states, and that’s how the voters and ID cards were found.

The CG also used the opportunity to brief the media. He said that non-Nigerians are not allowed to vote, so the agency is doing what it needs to do to get the arrested foreigners out of the country and make sure they don’t have anything to do with the country’s elections.

He said, “The general election is a chance for us to show how good we are at managing borders and gathering intelligence.”

“We all know how important elections are to the Federal Government. In particular, this 2023 general election, which will end the current administration’s eight-year term, will mark 24 years since our country went back to democracy without a break.”

To this end, he said, “I also want to take this chance to thank the different Command Comptrollers who helped get rid of immigrants without proper documentation in their commands because of different Immigration offenses.” He also said, “This period requires the highest level of security awareness from all personnel, and any acts of compromise will be treated as sabotage against our national security.”

The CG said that 3,823 national identity cards and 2,381 voters cards had been taken away. He also said that the NIS had asked the NIMC to remove the imposters’ information from its database so that they couldn’t get more ID cards and voters cards. He also said that the INEC would be contacted to remove their names from its register.

He said that the service has started using technology to keep an eye on what’s going on at the country’s borders in order to be more efficient and better protect the country’s borders.
