Millions of Nigerians turned out to vote in the most competitive presidential election since military rule ended.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has been run by the APC and the PDP together since 1999.
However, a strong challenge this time comes from Peter Obi of the Labor Party, a third-party candidate who has the support of many young Nigerians.
The 2023 election is expected to draw a large number of first-time voters and young people; one-third of the 87 million eligible voters are under the age of 35, which could result in a higher voter turnout than the 35% recorded in 2019.
This is the first time INEC will hold national elections using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), a facial and fingerprint technology that they believe will improve transparency and make it more difficult for politicians to rig the presidential election results.
To win in the first round, a candidate must get a majority of the vote and 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja).
