Fuel Crisis Disrupts Essential Services Across Nigeria

As the fuel scarcity and hike in fuel price continue to linger, cost commodities, services have continue to skyrocket and in some cases these essential services are disrupted as a result of which.

Reports from our correspondents show that the lack of fuel and the rise in pump prices have made it harder to provide essential services across the country.

Even though it is hard to get, a litre now costs between N250 and N550 in most of the country’s states.

1) The general election is in about 16 days, and there are strong signs that the lack of could cause problems. This was said by Mahmood Yakubu, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission, during a meeting with Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank, on Tuesday at the headquarters in Abuja.

2) Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has changed his mind about letting the PDP presidential campaign use Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. The governor had already taken away the access the PDP Presidential Campaign Council had been given.

3) In a country where cash is hard to come by, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) found N258 million stashed in a bank vault. The anti-corruption agency’s spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, said that the money, which was all in new naira notes, was found in the vault of the Abuja head office of Sterling Bank. Read More

4) The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been told by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that the CBN will not do anything that would hurt the success of the general elections in 2023. The CBN governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, gave the promise when he met with the INEC management, led by the commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

5) Yesterday, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, was thrown into chaos when angry young people blocked some roads, lit fires, and destroyed political billboards to protest the lack of new naira notes. It was thought that the protest happened because the naira and fuel crises in the country were making life harder and harder.

6) Yesterday, there was a big change in the Nigeria Force. This was because senior police officers between the ranks of Commissioners of Police and Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, DIGs, were moved to different Police Commands, Departments, and formations all over the country.

8) Yesterday, Abdullahi Ganduje, the governor of Kano State, warned that “anti-June 12 elements” were trying to destroy the democracy in the country. He said that the groups were “regrouping and dangerously disguising themselves” in the current crisis caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new cash policy in order to reach their goal.

9) On Tuesday, Mr. Ayotunde Solademi, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, told an Ikeja Special Offences Court how one Kolawole Erinle allegedly stole $1.4 million from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in the United States. The witness, a Foreign Service national investigator for the FBI in the US Consulate in Nigeria’s Office of the Legal Attaché, said that spoofing happened to the university.

10) Men from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Gombe State Command, have arrested a 40-year-old man named Usman Mohammed for luring 12 children between the ages of five and ten. Mohammed, who lives in Liji in the Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of the State, is said to be an expert at getting sexually involved with young people.
