What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?

 

 

1)Today, Wednesday, the Federal Government will begin the evacuation of approximately 5,500 Nigerians, including students detained in Khartoum and other cities in Sudan. To facilitate the repatriation, the government has allocated N150 million for the rental of forty buses to transport its destitute citizens from Sudan to Cairo, Egypt.

2) The crisis in the Taraba State chapter of the All Progressives Congress took a dramatic turn on Tuesday, when the El-Suldi Ibrahim-led State Working Committee expelled David Kente, a candidate for governor in the just-concluded general elections. The party also suspended Jimkuta David, the senator-elect for Taraba South, for anti-party activities and recommended to the national secretariat that he be expelled from the party. Read More

3) President Muhammadu Buhari stated on Tuesday in Accra, Ghana, that Nigeria “extremely anticipates” the proposed joint Africa Naval Exercise of the Gulf of Guinea Commission on May 15, 2023 in Lagos. Regular meetings between the members of the Gulf of Guinea Commission were also cited as essential to attaining peace and security in the region.

4) Following the return of the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, some of the candidates for Senate President and other important positions in the 10th National Assembly have intensified their lobbying efforts. Some of the leading candidates for Senate President, including Senators Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau, visited Tinubu at his Abuja residence yesterday.

5) The post-election crisis in the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reached a new level as the State Working Committee of the party has announced the suspension of the Chairman, Hon Phillips Aivoji, and the Deputy Chairman, Hon Benedict Felix Tai.

6) The Labour Party, LP, warned yesterday that the self-proclaimed chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa, has petitioned the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss all cases filed by the party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against President-elect Bola Tinubu. In a statement, Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the party, urged the tribunal to disregard Apapa. Read More

7) Yesterday, a notice motion was filed at the Court of Appeal in Abuja to prevent Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being inaugurated as Nigeria’s new president on May 29, 2023. Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru, a presidential candidate in the 2019 election and constitutional attorney, along with his political party, the Hope Democratic Party (HDP), filed the lawsuit marked CA/CV/259/2023.

8) Yesterday, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, for applicants to tertiary institutions began nationwide. While some candidates were fortunate enough to be assigned to centres where things generally ran smoothly, others had tales of disappointment and dissatisfaction to share.

9) Samad, a 23-year-old commercial tricycle operator, was killed in a cult conflict in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State. He was allegedly murdered by members of a covert cult. His killers deposited his body in front of a mosque in the Abayawo neighbourhood of Ilorin in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state, according to reports.

10) Taiye Atobiloye, a police officer with the Kwara State Police Command, perished in a cell at the Kogi State Police Command’s D Division after being detained for being absent from duty for two days at the Zone 8 Command in Lokoja, Kogi State.
