What are the Nigerian newspapers’ headlines for today?

 

 

1) Yhe Presidential Election Petitions Court has scheduled Monday for the hearing of petitions challenging the declaration of as president-elect by the All Progressives Congress. With this development, the anticipated legal conflict between candidates contesting the results of the 2023 presidential election will begin on May 8.

 

2) President Muhammadu Buhari stated in Abuja on Tuesday that his administration had brought change to Nigerians, particularly in the area of affordable housing. During the inauguration of a housing estate in Zuba, Abuja, on Tuesday, while evaluating the performance of his administration, the President stated that the new housing estate was addressing multidimensional poverty among the citizens.

 

3) Police began questioning the suspended Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, on Tuesday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja for alleged impropriety during the April 15 supplementary election for governor in Adamawa State. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed that Yunusa-Ari and other suspects were in police custody and being interrogated.

 

4) Dave Umahi, governor of Ebonyi State and senator-elect, informed President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja of his intention to serve as president of the tenth senate. Umahi, who disclosed this after meeting with the President at the Aso Rock Villa, argued that the All Progressives Congress must be guided by “justice, equity, and fairness” when allocating the principal offices of the 10th National Assembly.

 

5) The Delta State Police Command has neutralised one alleged kidnapper while arresting three others with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. The police team also recovered an AK-47 rifle, a locally-made double-barreled firearm, 18 rounds of ammunition, and a GLK Benz believed to be stolen from the suspects.

 

6) Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, declared today a public holiday so that the people of Rivers State can give President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu a warm welcome. On Wednesday and Thursday, the President-elect will inaugurate the Rumuola/Rumuokwuta Flyover and the ultra-modern Magistrates’ Court Complex in Port Harcourt during his two-day official visit to Rivers State.

 

7) Yesterday, the House of Representatives urged the Central Criminal Court and the government of the United Kingdom to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, who have been convicted of organ harvesting.

 

8) The first group of Sudanese refugees is expected to arrive today after numerous delays. According to Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), an Air Peace plane landed in Egypt last night.

 

9) President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the termination of Dr. Ferdinand Giadom’s position as project director for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP). The dismissal notice was spotted yesterday in a tweet from the Nigerian Presidency’s official Twitter account, @NGRPresident.

 

10) Fatima Rahman, a 42-year-old woman from Chad Republic, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre for the alleged murder of her co-wife, Adizat, at her residence on Alejo Street, Ijede, in the Ikorodu region of Lagos State. Fatima was charged with one count of murder on Tuesday before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka in Yaba Magistrates’ Court.
