NLC settles for consensus candidate as Ayuba Wabba bows out as president
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has chosen a consensus candidate to succeed Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who is stepping down as president of the country’s labour union.
Wabba has completed two four-year terms of service. In 2015, he was elected president of the NLC following an election marred by controversy.

The 13th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of the union has been scheduled for February 7, 2023, at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Crisis marred Wabba’s first term as President of the NLC, which was contested by opposing factions who ultimately lost the election.
Joe Ajaero, General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), was brought on board as Deputy National President as a result of the efforts of the union’s former leaders to broker a cease-fire between the warring factions.
NLC new President
There are indications that the NLC’s National Administrative Council has chosen Ajaero to succeed Wabba.
“Building People’s Power, National Unity, and Quest for a New Social Contract” is the theme of the thirteenth quadrennial National Delegates Conference.
It is anticipated that local and foreign dignitaries, including former NLC President Adams Oshiomhole, will attend the event, which often serves as a platform for political candidates to sell their mandates.
