TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash, state media reported early Monday. The crash occurred Sunday in the northwest of the country near the border with Azerbaijan, as Raisi was returning from the inauguration of a dam on the Aras River.

The helicopter carried nine individuals, including prominent officials such as Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Ayatollah Al Hashem, a representative of the supreme leader for parts of Azerbaijan.

The crash left no survivors, according to Tasnim News Agency, a government-affiliated outlet. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, but adverse weather conditions, including heavy fog, reportedly hampered rescue efforts.

Raisi, a hardline cleric who took office in August 2021, was known for his stringent crackdowns on political dissent and his role in enforcing strict social policies. His presidency saw increased uranium enrichment and military tensions with the West, as well as a severe response to mass protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.

Immediate Succession Plans

According to Iranian law, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume power following approval from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. A presidential election must be called within 50 days to officially elect Raisi’s successor. Khamenei assured that state affairs would continue without disruption.

Investigation and International Response

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that intelligence reports indicate no evidence of foul play in the crash, attributing the incident to poor weather conditions. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the precise factors leading to the fatal accident.

The death of Raisi, who was considered a potential successor to Khamenei, marks a significant moment in Iran’s political landscape. His tenure was marked by controversial policies and international tensions, making his unexpected death a critical event with potential far-reaching implications for Iran and its relations with the global community.
