Okay Daddy’: I phoned Oyedepo, but never said election is religious war –

Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP presidential candidate, has confirmed having a phone conversation with David Oyedepo, the founder of Winners Chapel, but he never referred to the 2023 election as a “religious war.”

Obi stated this on Monday while discussing the issue on Arise Television, stating that he contacted the cleric to solicit votes.

Recall that in April, an audio recording of a conversation between Obi and Oyedepo had leaked.

Following the release of the video, Obi stated that the audio had been altered and that he had never “said, thought, or even implied that the 2023 election is or was a religious war.”

Obi remarked, “Call it whatever you want. Regardless of one’s interpretation of it. I am not religiously intolerant. Do you believe I could simply pick up the phone and say “religious war”? “No, I begged the bishop to help me ask his people to vote, which was what I had been doing for six months,” Obi explained.

“I did not say ‘catch him’, ‘kill him,’ or ‘force it’. I was even begging. This demonstrates that I continued to beg for votes. There were numerous things we attempted that were unacceptable.

“Let me tell you, those attempting to manipulate Nigerians have been doing so.” However, it is coming to a close. The individuals they have been manipulating are starving to death.

“They will quickly determine who the religious or tribal bigots are. I am neither. I just gave you an example of how I constructed mosques. No non-Muslim governor has sent more pilgrims to Mecca than I have to date.

“I would never refer to the election as a religious war. Since it is not. There was a discussion. But I never claimed it to be a religious conflict. What’s the point? I am surrounded by individuals.

“If ever a presidential candidate and his deputy worked like brothers, it would be me and Datti. And I am aware, and we never cease discussing it.

“For the first time in Nigeria’s history, the presidential candidate, his running mate, and the party chairman were all born after the country’s independence.

“We must save this country, and he (Datti) is aware of my dedication to doing so. I cannot do all of these with religious conflict in the background.”
