Olumakaiye:10 Things to Know about the Late Anglican Bishop

Most Reverend Humphrey Olumakaiye, the 53-year-old Archbishop of Lagos Province, Bishop of Lagos Diocese, and member of the Anglican Communion, passed away on Monday, October 31.

Olumakaiye’s “episcopal sojourn in the Diocese of Lagos and later the Province was characterized by phenomenal, physical and spiritual developments, for which all of us shall remain very proud,” according to a statement co-signed by the Chancellor, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji, and the Synod Secretary, Ven. ‘Segun Ladeinde.

1. On January 28, 1969, Olumakaiye was born in Okene to the Venerable and Mrs. T.A. Olumakaiye.

2.On November 7, 2021, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, at the Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, he was installed as the Archbishop of Lagos Ecclesiastical Province.

3. He served as the Bishop of Lagos and the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos (Anglican Communion) until his death in 2018. Prior to that, he served as the Bishop of Osun North-East for the Church of Nigeria.

4. The deceased Archbishop was a native of the Ondo State town of Idanre.

5. He began his education in 1975 at St. Michael’s Primary School in Esie and transferred in 1982 to Government Secondary School in Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

6. He left Omu-Aran in 1983 and finished his secondary education in 1986 at Cherubim Seraphim Secondary School in Ilorin.

7. Between 1991 and 1993, he earned his first degree in religious studies from the University of Ibadan, and in 2001, he earned his master’s degree in the same field. He went on to finish his education at the same university, earning a doctorate in Church History and Doctrine.

8. He was ordained as a priest by E.A. Ademowo, Bishop of the Ilesha Diocese, in December of the same year that he was made a deacon. This came after Olumakaiye had completed his training and Immanuel College of Theology degree.

9. In June 1993, he began serving as a priest at Christ the Saviour Anglican Church in Cappa, Ilesa, Osun State.

10. Olumakaiye, at 40 years old, was elected bishop on May 22, 2009; he was ordained a bishop on July 12, 2009, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state; and on July 16, 2009, he was installed as the first bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Osun North-East at the Cathedral Church of St. Philip’s in Otan Ayegbaju.

Olumakaiye was married to Motunrayo Funke, a professor and the former head of the nutrition and consumer sciences department of the faculty of agriculture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, until his passing. Their son, Richard Tunbamise, was born.

At the age of 53, Olumakaiye passed away after a brief illness on October 31, 2022.
