Your Appointments Are Lopsided, Lack Merit – Olusegun Obasanjo to Buhari

Concerned Nigerians including the former president of the country, Olusegun Obasanjo have complained that President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointments are unfair and based on mediocrity and nepotism.

Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, added that the current administration has ignored many of the measures put in place to give all groups in the nation a sense of belonging.

Obasanjo said this while speaking on Saturday at the 50th anniversary of the Federal Government College in Kaduna under the title “The Quest For Unity In Nigeria And The Role Of Unity Schools.”

“First, I am concerned that the state of our country’s economy has widened the gap between the rich and poor and left many people in despair,” he said. Poverty and hardship have returned to many households as a result of rising inflation.

Many of the economic advancements made in the first decade of the century have been undone in the last ten years. Across the country, there is a general feeling of helplessness and an uncontrollable insecurity.

“Political sabotage also exists in addition to economic hardship. Never before have we been as intentionally divided politically along racial, religious, and other fault lines. Government appointments are biased and uneven because of mediocrity, nepotism, and a disregard for competence and merit. The upcoming elections could make the situation worse.

“Political parties and politicians are now more willing to abandon some of the measures put in place to foster a sense of community among all groups. Exclusion is accepted as commonplace. We are faced with disunity, and many of our leaders are more focused on their own self-interests than the continued existence and well-being of our country.

“Let me reiterate that the concerns expressed regarding the type of choices we have, such as in the Presidential elections, are valid and should not be dismissed.

“Nigeria belongs to us all, and no region of the nation should be in any way uncertain about its place in this union based on ethnicity, religion, language, region, culture, or social standing.”

The beauty of democracy, according to Obasanjo, is that it cannot be imposed on Nigerians, he said.

“If we decide to do nothing, we will only be responsible for ourselves. If we make the right decision, we will put this nation back on the right path, one that gives all of our citizens a sense of identity, a sense of shared purpose, and a stake in the project Nigeria. This project will give us all peace, security, stability, shared prosperity, hope, and progress, as well as a place in the comity of nations, he said.

At the time this report was filed, attempts to contact the Presidency had been unsuccessful because Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, had not returned calls or messages.
