Gunmen kill police officer in Aba

In Aba, Abia State, South-east Nigeria, gunmen who are thought to be members of the illegal Indigenous People of Biafra shot and killed a police inspector on Tuesday.

This online newspaper gathered that two of the gunmen died in a shootout with the police.

Geoffrey Ogbonna, the police spokesperson for Abia State, confirmed the killing and stated that it occurred around 12:30 p.m.

The gunmen started shooting at some police officers from a nearby station while they were on patrol, according to Superintendent Ogbonna.

He claimed that the assailants took a rifle from the murdered police officer.

A witness in Aba told our correspondent that the dead officer was killed while pursuing the gunmen who were escaping.

We were on our way to the market when we noticed these boys riding a tricycle while carrying extremely potent weapons.

“Some Police officers on patrol soon began to follow them after they passed us.

Two of them were killed by the police officer who engaged them; the others fled, and one of them ran into the wall of a nearby building.

“Unaware that another robber was waiting for him, the inspector pursued the robber who had fled to the back of a nearby building.

The witness claimed, “The robber shot at the inspector at close range and killed him on the spot.”

The police spokesperson claimed that officers were pursuing the fugitive gunmen. He urged locals to come forward with any information that could help catch the suspects.
