Popular APC Governor Pardons Over 4,000 Prison Inmates

Over the course of his eight-year tenure as Governor of Kano State, has extended clemency to more than four thousand individuals who were incarcerated in state prisons.

In a statement released to the press on Saturday, Hassan Musa Fagge, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano State, disclosed this information.

According to a recent statement, a total of 4,013 have been granted pardons throughout all correctional facilities in the state during Governor Ganduje’s two terms in office.

According to Fagge, the state government has reportedly paid fines and compensations amounting to N4.4 million to the inmates within a span of eight years.

During the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at the Goron Dutse custodial facility, the governor’s representative, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, announced the pardon of 43 inmates serving jail terms for various offences. The governor himself was not present but expressed his support for the decision.

In his address, he emphasised the paramount importance of freedom in the lives of individuals. He also urged the recently pardoned prisoners to demonstrate exemplary behaviour in all aspects of their lives as they reintegrate into society.

According to the Controller of the Correctional Service in the state, Suleiman Inuwa, the release of inmates who have paid their fines and compensation would aid in reducing congestion within the facilities and promoting a peaceful environment within the yard.

The Nigerian Correctional Service has made an appeal to other states to follow in their footsteps and replicate their recent gesture. The beneficiaries of this act have also been urged to uphold the law and exhibit good behaviour, thereby becoming exemplary ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The Chairman of the Prerogative of Mercy Council, Abdullahi Rano, expressed gratitude towards the governor for utilising his constitutional authority to release inmates based on the recommendations of the correctional service management and the council.
