Enugu: Pastor recounts how he escaped kidnappers along Adani/Nsukka road

A pastor from Enugu described how he escaped being kidnapped by gunmen along the Adani/Nsukka motorway.

Evang. recounted on Facebook how traumatized he was when he witnessed daredevil criminals abusing his colleagues on the roads.

“Two days ago, on Thursday, June 8, I narrowly escaped kidnapping on the Adani/Nsukka road.

“While travelling from Onitsha to the town of Nsukka, we encountered kidnappers. The villagers reported that while I and my fellow passengers escaped unharmed, the driver before us was killed and his passengers were abducted.

“I have never been as traumatised as I was by my experience two days ago, but the good is that I am safe.”

“I am saddened and heartbroken over the murder of the driver, as well as for the hostages. I pray that God will grant them success.”

Investigations revealed that one of the abducted passengers, Amobi Ugwu, was also travelling from Onitsha to Nsukka at the time of the incident.

According to one of his relatives who requested anonymity, Amobi travelled to Onitsha to purchase goods in bulk.

“When they arrived at Adani around 7:00 p.m., his driver informed him that he would spend the night and continue the journey the following day. However, Amobi insisted that he must reach Nsukka that night.

“However, the driver had to transfer Amobi’s shipment to another driver who was also desperate to reach Nsukka that night.”

“When they arrived at a place known as Ugwu rice (a rice farm), gunmen shot their vehicle’s tyres and killed the driver instantly, while Amobi was abducted.”

When asked if the kidnappers have contacted Amobi’s family members for ransom, our source responded, “Yes, they have.” They did not specify the sum. The relatives pleaded with the kidnappers to accept five hundred thousand naira, but the kidnappers disconnected the phone.

They have not contacted the relatives since then.

Since then, the Adani/Nsukka road has become a haven for kidnappers and other criminal activity in the council.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Enugu state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, was unavailable for confirmation when contacted by phone.
