Televangelist dies at 93

 

Pat Robertson, a prominent televangelist who founded the Christian Broadcasting Network, has reportedly passed away.

 

On Thursday, Robertson, who made the Christian right a powerful political force and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1988, passed away at the age of 93.

According to a statement released by the network, Pat Robertson, a longtime TV host, religious broadcaster, educator, humanitarian, and one-time presidential candidate, passed away at his Virginia Beach home early on Thursday. He was 93,”

 

Regent University in Virginia also released a statement lamenting Robertson’s passing.

William L. Hathaway, executive vice president for academic affairs at Regent University, said, “We are deeply saddened by the death of our beloved founder.”

 

“Dr. Robertson was a world-renowned leader, broadcaster, philanthropist, educator, author, successful businessman, and, most importantly, a devoted servant of God who devoted his life to glorifying the Lord and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Robertson, who was born in 1930, established the Christian Broadcasting Network in 1960 and was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister the following year. He targeted gay rights, feminism, abortion, and other social issues while delivering his message of conservative Christian values to the general public via television.

Robertson was instrumental in transforming the conservative evangelical movement into a political force on the American right that contributed to Ronald Reagan’s election. In 1988, he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for president, finishing behind both George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole.

 

After establishing the Christian Coalition of America, which conservative Christian political candidates, he returned to his television programme “The 700 Club.”

Robertson expressed a number of incendiary and divisive views and asserted repeatedly that acts of terrorism or natural disasters were divine punishment for perceived immorality.

 

He became a supporter of former President Donald Trump in recent years, and in 2017 he linked the Las Vegas mass shooting to “disrespect” for Trump.
