Nigerian Lawyer has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) if he is sincere about his apologies.

The demand comes in the wake of the President’s recent statement expressing regret over the civil war and calling for national unity.

 

Aloy Ejimakor, the legal representative of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to release Kanu from custody as a demonstration of the sincerity of his apologies to Nigerians.

In a recent tweet, Mr. Ejimakor has called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others who have been detained due to their pursuit of self-determination. He has urged those responsible to demonstrate the sincerity of their apology by taking this action.

Following President Buhari’s plea for forgiveness as he prepares to hand over power to a new government on May 29th, the individual in question took to Twitter to express their thoughts.

During the Eid-el-Fitr celebration on Friday, the President who is about to leave office, made a plea to the Nigerian people to forgive him for any harm he may have caused them.

In a humble plea to the Nigerian people, President Muhammadu Buhari acknowledged his fallibility as a human being and expressed regret for any harm he may have caused during his tenure as the country’s leader. The president made this appeal during a dinner event that followed a prayer session, where he implored the over 200 million citizens of Nigeria to forgive him. According to the speaker, it appears to be a fortuitous moment to bid farewell and express gratitude for the nearly eight years of patience extended towards him.

In response, Mr. Ejimakor criticised Mr. Buhari’s self-determination policy, citing his nearly eight-year administration’s record of extrajudicial killings of separatists and agitators in the country.

 

 

According to sources, it has been suggested that Mr. Buhari must release Mr. Kanu, who has been in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) since June 2021, before his tenure comes to an end.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Charles Soludo, has reportedly urged the Buhari administration to have faith in him, as he has offered to act as a guarantor for the release of the detained separatist leader.

The call for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government has been passionately made by concerned individuals. The individual stated, “If unconditional release is not possible, then I am requesting for him to be released to me instead, and I will serve as his guarantor.”
